Description: It is a succulent plant with a tree-like appearance, known for its tall, candelabra-shaped stems and clusters of green leaves at the top. An exceptionally tall succulent, reaching a mature height of up to 40 feet. Short spines grow on the ridges, and vertically oriented branches will produce small, yellow flowers and a round, red fruit. Branches grow in abundance at the tip.
Habitat: Dry regions with sandy or rocky soil, such as savannas, grasslands, and scrublands.
Distribution: Eastern Angola, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia.
Uses: Ornamental plant. The milky latex of the tree is extremely poisonous and can cause blindness, severe skin irritation and poisoning (when ingested) in humans and animals. However, this plant has been used medicinally as a purgative or for ulcers. Venda and Sotho people use it against cancer.
