The Indian Pond Heron is a small, stocky heron found across the Indian subcontinent. It has drab, brownish plumage that provides right camouflage in wetland habitat. During the breeding season, it develops striking white wings and a maroon back. This heron feeds on fish, insects, and small aquatic animals, often seen stalking prey in shallow water. The bird is an efficient and patient hunter. It stands still for long periods before striking its pray. The Indian Pond Heron nests in colonies, often with other waterbirds. Its adaptability to different wetland environments makes it a common sight in its range.
