Description: A. cathartica is a tropical vine or shrub with glossy green leaves and bright yellow trumpet-shaped flowers.

Habitat:  A. cathartica can be found growing in a variety of habitats including disturbed areas, roadsides, forest edges, abandoned gardens and farms.

Distribution: A. cathartica is native to South America including Brazil, French Guyana, Guyana, Suriname, and Venezuela .

Uses: In traditional medicine, various parts of the plant have been used to treat certain ailments. It attracts various insects including bees and butterflies. It is a good garden plant with bright yellow flowers. In the tropical parts, it is used as a purgative and to induce vomiting at low dosage (has to use as per the directions of a authorized medical practitioner). High dosage may be toxic. Flower extracts of this species has anti-inflammatory, laxative, antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal and invitro hepatoprotective properties.
