Description: A deciduous tree, reaching up to 14m height. The branchlets are minutely covered with stellate hairs. leaves are imparipinnately compound that are alternately arranged, with a single terminal leaflet at the tip. Leaflets are usually 5 densely velvet-hairy when young. Flowers are unisexual, greenish in color, the male flowers are in panicle and female flowers are in simple racemes. Fruit is ovoid in shape, compressed.

Distribution:  Sri Lanka to Indo-Malesia and China

Uses: Young leaves and leaf sprouts are eaten raw or cooked in some places. Bark and leaves are used in treating a variety of ailments such as ulcers, hepatitis, diabetes, heart disease, and dysentery. A gum from the trunk is used in confectionery. Powdered bark is used as a flavouring agent. A soluble resin, Jingan gum from the stem is used for calico printing.
